Honestly, in Germany (2007-2008) I heard the English word "sorry" about as often as I heard "Entschuldigung" or "Es tut mir Leid". Granted, this was among students, but I think "sorry" is taking over because people realize it requires a lot less effort to say.
At first I thought people were saying it while I was present just because I was an American, until I began to observe people that didn't even know...
