Just stumbled across a documentary, that apparently aired at the 2008 Sundance Festival, sometime last month. It's about a group of linguists who go out and travel to find speakers of the world's most endangered languages. It looks really fascinating.
Quote:
The Linguists, a documentary featuring Assistant Professor of Linguistics K. David Harrison (left), had its world premiere at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival this month. The film, the subject of a recent front page story in the Philadelphia Inquirer and another in the New York Times, follows Harrison and Gregory Anderson as they document disappearing languages around the world and is the first documentary supported by the National Science Foundation to screen at Sundance. |

Looks interesting.
I dream than one day I can do likewise for the Trans-New Guinea Languages. All being overrun by Indonesian and Tok Pisin :(

Here's a YouTube interview with one of the linguists in the film, talking about language extinction and also his book "When Languages Die: The Extinction of the World's Languages and the Erosion of Human Knowledge" ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmLYo8zQOVs&feature=related

I saw this movie, at the AFI Film Festival in Dallas.
It was really quite good, they went to quite a few places around the world and it showed how they work to document the dying languages, and why.
It was a good movie, I would recommend it to anyone interested in languages.
