I've read most of the book now and I have to say that so much of the evidence is anecdotal that it still leaves me resoundingly sceptical. Put it this way: no modern linguist would accept Russell's 'evidence' as evidence. Doubtless even Mezzofanti himself wouldn't have been too impressed!
