I'm sorry to hear about your laptop and mp3 player. To lose both at once is bad luck indeed. Best of luck with your Thai learning and upcoming trip.

What a double stroke of bad luck! I'm so sorry this happened to you, DaraghM. I hope you have much better luck with your trip to Thailand in a couple of weeks, and that you can get everything back on track as soon as possible.
On a note of empathy, I lost all my data when both my computer and external backup drive failed earlier this year. So I know how gutting this can be. The photos for me were a particular loss, as they were irreplaceable.
On the positive side though, it really helped clean up my raggle-taggle bookmarks and clear out thousands of random files (concealed in every technical nook and cranny imaginable) that I never knew I never needed. So this can also be an opportune time for fresh beginnings and hardened steely determination. Good luck!

Thank folks for the sympathetic posts. When I eventually get a new laptop, I vow I'll burn backup copies of nearly everything.

I still haven't got a laptop yet, so my time to post is still very limited. The trip to Thailand was very good from a language learning perspective. Apart from the previously mentioned resources, I actually did some Thai lessons when I was there. The lessons were offered by our hotel for free, and I was the only person who availed of them. This meant I had one to one sessions with a very competent teacher. I got to query areas of Thai grammar I wasn't clear on, and I got to really practice my conversation skills. She knew the IPA, and also had a number of other languages herself. Overall, this really helped develop my language skills.
With no laptop, I'm still restricted to what languages I can study. However, I discovered a backup copy of Modern Russian 1 audio on my folks PC, so it's back to Russian now.
Time to Thai\Polish and Others Target: 4 hours (From 100 hours goal)

Free one-to-one language sessions - how cool! Now that's the type of hotel I'd like to stay at... :)

I'd love to do it again. I imagine the classes were originally planned for a group, but there was no take up. The session itself felt like a blend of a Michel Thomas lesson, an immersive conversation, and a open ended discussion. I think other hotels should do something similar, especially if it's free. :-)

My main study since my last post has been Russian, but I've also dabbled in French, Spanish, and even Danish again. Aside from Modern Russian 1, I also purchased the new Teach Yourself course, Complete Russian. I'd been flicking through the book a number of times, and eventually decided to buy it. I prefer their new course, to the previous edition, which I never got. Compared to Modern Russian 1, the course moves incredibly fast, and crams in a lot of information in each unit.
Time to Russian Target: 68 hours (From 200 hours goal)
Time to French\Hungarian Target: 16 hours (From 100 hours goal)
