Well i moved to canada when i was 4 years old from Belgium, sort of like Aquarius.
I do however remember few details about how i learned new words so i will try and see if i can contribute but im uncertain of what help it will bring this thread but i will try.
I remember when i would learn new words like outside and inside i just played with them. I would go outside and mutter "outside" to myself all the while. I would go outside and stare up at my roof and mutter to myself "outside". Now that i think of it, whenever i hear the word "outside" and i think alittle bit about it, i associate it with a roof like i did when i was little because that was what i was staring at when i learned it.
Onother memory from kindergarten. The teacher told us to stay in "line" and to go single file. When i heard it i would repeat the word to myself "line". I couldn't pronounce it at the time so i pronounced it as lion and then i just had fun with that.
You know how kids are easily amused. Well i was just playing with the word "line". I would just say "come on guys lets get in lion" and just start laughing over the word i mispronounced.
Im not sure if this offers any insight but i hope this can give you some idea. I wonder if this is just unique to my experence as having onother first language or it is the same for the other kids who i was growing up with? who had only english
