Just don't let it interfere unduly with your plan to learn all of the Slavonic languages.

Марк, I had asked my ex-Russian tutor and she thinks that while your sentence "В него
летит мяч." is not wrong, it is weird, because it means that the ball can fly into the
person's body. The better expression should be "К нему летит мяч.", unless you are
talking about quantum mechanics.

These are different things. If the ball is aimed to hit him, for example his face, it is
normal, from my point of view. But we can certainly say В него летит пуля.

QiuJP, as if I should distract you from your current work, but you may want to see this thread about marking the direct object's definiteness. Direct objects in some languages take on some kind of marking (be it a suffix or what looks like a postposition) only when they carry some sense of definiteness, otherwise they stay uninflected and so look as if they're in the nominative.
