I also like the memoir ‘From the Land of Green Ghosts’ by Pascal Khoo Thwe. He was from the Karenni ethnic group, I think, and went from being a student in Mandalay to a guerilla fighter, then a refugee in Thailand, and finally a student at Cambridge. Most people from these groups seem to be multilingual – a Kachin woman once told me her father spoke seven languages.

You never know, Myanmar is changing very quickly, opening up to outside influences, and Burmese might turn out to be useful for an international career. There are very few foreigners who speak it fluently.
