I've just stumbled upon Nadine Chahine's very interesting PhD thesis, Reading Arabic : legibility studies for the Arabic script (PDF links).
The thesis might also be of interest to HTLAL members who cannot read Arabic, since the author doesn't assume any Arabic reading skills and outlines the history and peculiarities of the Arabic alphabet in great detail.
