Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I've heard that Jackie Chan, yes the martial artist, is fluent in several languages and/or dialects. Can anyone help me verify this ?

Ackording to the thread Polyglot actors/actresses he speaks Mandarin, Korean, Japanese and English in addition to his native Cantonese. He has also recorded a lot of songs in other languages, and usually sings the main theme in his own films. It struck me the other day that the Mandarin theme of "Once Upon a Time in China" is sung by Jackie, while the Cantonese version is not, although that is his native language. :)

I'd love to hear some of his music. Especially the Japanese stuff. Apparently he's a pop star lol

Yeah, but, unfortunately, it doesn't take a lot of talent to become a pop star in Asia. Jackie admits that he isn't the best singer, but it's something that people want. A lot of the pop stars in Asia are also actors and models, and a lot of actors put out albums and do modeling. I don't think Chan speaks fluent Japanese, unless he's been working at it quite recently.

he doesn't, although his Korean is good enough to do interviews, probably similar to his level of English. as an aside, his first language is actually Mandarin not Cantonese. His parents came from the Shandong/Shanghai area of China, as well he attended the Peking Opera School though it was located in HK. On the Jackie Chan Adventures cartoon there is a small clip of him answering questions, I saw a spot where he said he dreams in Mandarin. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Wow, I never knew that he can speak Japanese or Korean. If that's so, howcome he never spoke Korean in the movie accidental spy ? Part of it took place in Korea and he was communicating in English the entire time. I could be wrong but this may be a recent acheivement.
