Jeffrey Tayler is an admirable living polyglot. A Moscow-based American journalist, "he is fluent in Russian, Arabic, French and Greek, and can get by in Turkish and Spanish". Besides, he writes elegantly in English, having authored several books about his journeys through some of the toughest places in the world, such as the Congo, the Sahel, and the Siberian wilderness, always accompanied only by local people. His ability to survive such adventures owes much to his language skills.
