i speak french and am learning italian and Spanish. i would like to read up on how the languages relate and also find out more about others like portuguese and romanian, all i've managed to find so far by googling is a book by rebecca posner.

The site EuroComRom (in German) is dedicated to the seven Roman languages : French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Catalan and Romansh. You can also download freely the book "Die sieben Siebe".

I'd recommend "The Loom of Languages". It has some good information, including the historical developments, sound shifts, and comparative tables.

If you already can read Spanish, I recommend you the following book by Tagliavini:
Tagliavini, Carlo (1993), Orígenes de las lenguas neolatinas, Madrid: Fondo de Cultura Económico. 84-375-0357-4.(traducción de la 5ª edición italiana de 1969) Talks about the main branches of Romanic languages, including Romanian, Arumanian, Romantsch... There's an excellent book on the Romance languages that's edited by Martin Harris in the Routledge series (a little bit thicker than the book by Posner that you found on Google.). I've consulted this series' books on Uralic, Germanic, Turkic and Slavonic languages and they're a bit technical but worth having if you're into comparing the languages within a family.

There is an outstanding book in French comparing the major romance languages "Comprendre les langues romanes" by Paul Teyssier:

Kudos, I think you will really enjoy it. For me, it was a catalyst that really motivated my language studies. It's one of those rare books that is very scholarly (as you will see from the extensive bibliography--many of which I plan to read) but also very readable--a very fun read. 1 person has voted this message useful |
