Speaking about Teyssier, he has also written a Portuguese grammar with the Brazilian and the European versions put side by side, - absolutely indispensable if you want to know exactly where the grammatical differences are.

I am reading "Manual de Lingüística Románica" by Iorgu Iordan and Maria Manoliu (two Romanian
linguists). It is a widespread manual in Spanish academia, I don't know how available it may be in languages other than Romanian and Spanish. The book of course is more a scientific study than a fun thing to read but you get a thorough approach to how the Romance languages became what they are by evolving from vulgar Latin. They certainly don't forget Romanian but the good thing is they even write about minor Romance languages, like Sardinian, Rheto-romance or the extinct Dalmatian. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I have almost finished "Comprendre les langues romanes" and would recommend it to anyone. Excellent stuff!

I agree that "The Loom of Languages" is one of the best books you can read not only in this subject but in general. Also, check out looks commenting on the histories of the Romance languages. From Cambridge University Press, "The Romance Languages" by Posner isn't bad at all, but it's very technical and scholarly.
