The post I made is not my own words but something I got in my mailbox, I guess it goes around the world. I read it and felt it had a entertainment value for this forum.

I do believe spelling is important and I also agree with bushwick and rob, 55 % seems low especially for native English speakers.

I could read the garbled text in the original message almost as easily as normal English. I also don't think it requires any kind of advanced skills. Non-native learners from intermediate level and up should be able to read it, as of course native speakers, unless they have special difficulties eg. due to dyslexia.

But i must confess I am totally stumped by "rfuf si sniend het cmneaes gdo ihtrg?". The best I can do is "ruff is sinned the ??? dog girth?" ? I can't believe there is actually any coherent meaning there in the first place, but would love to be proved wrong. Please help!

I'm equally stumped, though I suspect 'girth' is more likely to be 'right', and 'dog' may or may not be 'god'. Short of running the above through programs to find other words with the same letters but transposed, I don't understand it.

I must admit, until I read Hencke's post, I thought this might be Cna yuo raed tihs Spanish-style (because of what DaraghM said)! I have no idea what that says.

EDIT: Ruff is Dennis the Menaces dog right? - this took a *long* time.

Ah, so it _did_ mean something. Thank you very much. Just goes to show that this can be difficult too.

I largely agree with this. Whilst I wouldn't dare say that everybody could easily read this, I have never met anybody who says they can't read it. I would dare say the number is significantly higher than 55/100.

possibly, but i'd pertain this has much more with one's general ability to read even normal text. people who read a lot would, in my opinion, would definitely be able to read this, specifically because of the amount they read.

reading becomes faster and faster with practice, to the point that, obviously, one does not read individual letters, rather the whole word.

considering that, most of the people on this forum are to be classified as experienced literati (we are language learners after all, a language doesn't come without excessive reading, unless immersed in an environment) it is obvious everyone can read this.

someone with less reading experience wouldn't, maybe. so i suppose it has nothing to do with the brain, and one's innate talents.
