My history teacher told me about her college Swahili teacher, whose last name was Issac. According to her, her teacher knew 23 different languages and 10 African dialects. He was especially interested in Ethiopia (history and stuff).
He had taught at Harvard, but he sued Harvard when he didn't get tenure and went to Princeton to teach for a year, which is how my teacher got him. When he corrected peoples' Swahili, he corrected them in their native languages if they spoke a language other than English.
