Anyway, for others who have similar thoughts, my few (euro)cents:
I'd go as young as possible for the tonal languages (Chinese, Thai etc.) and/or those that pose the least similarities compared to your native language (or to any other language, like Japanese). Then as mentioned, do concentrate on, say, one major language per language (sub)family. Go for like English, French, Russian, Standard Arabic, Hindi. With a solid foundation in such model languages, it then should be easier to pick up their varieties/siblings.
