I ve read the quote of a king (i don't remember his name) who told that German is for speaking with an enemy, French is for speaking with a freind, Spanish is for God and Italian is for love.....what about other languges?

I thought about English...it's a language of mass culture and of globalism...what do you think of other languages?

I think the king was the emperor Charles the fifth (1500-1558) ;-)

I looked up Charles Quint when I first read this post but could not find the quote. Thanks!

A friend of mine told that with some little changes:

English: to speak to men
French: to speak to women
German: to speak to the animals
Spanish: for singing

Interesting this would be brought up. I've always thought of Spanish as being a very good language for singing.

HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR CHARLES THE FIFTH:

"I speak Spanish to God, Italian to musicians, Spanish to women, French at the Court, German to my servants and English to my horse."

Do you believe he was really that discriminating?

I doubt that he would speak French at court. He lived long before the time of Louis XIV where French really became popular outside France, and where the French succeeded in getting a Bourbon on the Spanish throne. He ruled a vast empire that comprised the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, much of Italy and Spain plus all the new colonies in the Americas. Why should he speak the language of just about the only country he didn't rule?
