I agree. I was surprised when I first saw the second variant in a book, but I'm not sure
it is not used.

Thanks Марк. This was in lesson 10 of Penguin, in case anyone was interested.

Alright, here's one that's been bugging me for a while. What is it with the native pronunciation of вре́мя and other
words ending in мя? I like to think I fully understand the pronunciation, and really don't find it difficult. My text-to-
speech program backs me up. But at least half the time I hear a native speaker say it, I hear an n sound in there (or
н in Russian). Is it just sloppy pronunciation?

Are you sure you're not hearing, времени, the genitive ? As in,

I have no time - у меня нет времени

This also applies to other words ending in -мя, like имя (name)

I have no name - у меня нет имени

[EDIT]

Or maybe you're hearing времена the plural.

Yes, I've been told this before by native speakers. A typical conversation will go like this:
Native: врена
Me: Did you just say врена? Don't you mean время?
Native: That's what I said, врена.
Me: Oh, so am I saying it wrong - время?
Native: Yes. You need to say it like this - врена.
Me: I see - врена.
Native: No! Hmm.... время.
Me: время?
Native: yes, that's right.

So, at the end of the conversation the native has said the м in a way that I can detect, just like my text-to-speech program. I've had this
(almost) identical conversation at least 3 times now. I ignore the problem now, because it's a waste of time. But I just wanted to see if I a
native here would have any more insight.

Then it is a mystery. Why a palatalized m ressembles a hard n to you, only God can tell.

I think that's because мя in время is not stressed and therefore pronounced as clear as for example in мясо.
