I'll be moving to the bay area in a few months and I'm wondering how big, if any, the Portuguese speaking
community is there? I'm currently trying to choose between Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese as my next language to
learn and I can't help but think that Spanish will have a much higher utility once I'm living in California. However, I
don't currently know any native Spanish speakers, but I do have several friends who are Brazilian, so from a personal
level Portuguese is more appealing! I'm just afraid that once I move to California I'll be hard press to find
circumstances where I'll be able to use Portuguese on a common basis.

Opportunities to use a language are made not found. If you have Braziian friends, speak
Portuguese.

I don't know any Breton people here and I still manage to speak it once every so often.

Well said, tarvos! You have more opportunity to use Portuguese in a large city like SF than I do on a small island in the Caribbean and I still have the opportunity to speak here from time to time. You just have to make the effort to do so. Ask around when you get there.

There is indeed a Brazilian community in the bay area. I follow Central do Brasil- @BrasilBayArea on twitter which announces Brazilian themed events there. There's also Street Smart Brazil which offers Portuguese classes in SF, another twitter follow. Seek and you shall find. Act upon what you find and you will make your opportunities.

Boa sorte!

Welcome to SF! You can probably find speakers of most any language you could ever want to study here. I
remember a quite large Portuguese community in the area when I was growing up (such as in San Leandro)
and I've definitely seen Brazilians. You'll certainly run into Spanish more often and there's plenty Spanish
language media on TV, the radio, etc but I don't think you'd have to look too hard to find Portuguese. One of
the organizers of my language meetup group speaks Portuguese so he's often able to attract Brazilians to our
events. I can't look up the link right now since I'm on my phone but I seem to remember the blogger for
Language is Music mentioning that there's a Portuguese language radio station in the Bay Area as well.
Good luck with your studies and with your move!

Tarvos, I couldn't agree more, but there is a certain allure to when you haphazardly comes across a different
language and you're able to actually understand and even participate. :)

@iguanamon and @sctroyenne thank you for the information! It's great to hear that there seems to be a fairly lively
Brazilian scene around the likes of SF :).
