Perhaps someone can explain. A friend of mine just said this to me, and I haven't a clue.

"What did the [female] monkey say to the [male] monkey?"
--"Let us (we monkeys) go"
But notice that Vamonos can be split into "Va monos", which is just a pun with "monos"
(we monkeys) from previously.
To be honest I do not find it funny, and the wordplay is not funny either. But I suppose
that might also be because I do not really like humour.

I'm still mystified, but I'll live. Thanks.

It's not exclusive to Venezuela. I've heard it said by Latins all over the place.
Also, two things:
- As 1e4e6 said, "Vamonos" can be split into "Va monos". Some (actually the majority) of the people I've heard say this suck the 'va' out of the word in other to make it sound like monos but keeping the meaning of vamonos.
- It's not a joke and it's not supposed to be funny. It's just a pun many people say in place of "let's go", and the actual point of the monos pun is to have one person ask and the other person respond, not to have the one person say the whole thing like a joke.
Therefore, next time someone asks you the first part ("¿qué le dijo la mona al mono?"), answer with "monos". If they know you're foreign, you'll look like a cultured connoisseur in Latin American wordplay. ;)
