Even in Madrid you will find plenty of people who prefer to speak Spanish rather than English. I guess the cities along the north coast would also be a good bet.

I can't stress listening to as much audio as possible when beginning. Music, TV, Radio, whatever you'd like. :) There's nothing I can suggest that wasn't already mentioned.

Best of luck!! Platiquemos is awesome too!

Awesome thanks!

When listening to audio do I have to understand it or understand the general gist of the conversation? Or do I just
have to get a feel for the language and notice the sounds of the language whilst not trying to follow along?

Sorry if these questions are silly, learning a language from scratch on my own seems quite challenging to do by
myself.

I have a Russian friend (who speaks Russian, English & German) but he had some communication problems in Santander because many of the locals only really spoke Spanish. The vast majority of British package-holiday tourists seem to go to the south coast. I don't think English is widely-spoken across Spain as a whole, although those who never go further afield than Benidorm probably insist that "everyone speaks English". Michael Portillo did a travel documentary on the BBC last night where he travelled through the country and he had to use his Spanish to communicate, even with young people.

Thanks! I'm sure my mum will look into it :-)

All of them. As soon as you step out of the tourist areas, people are less likely to answer in English. You don't have
to go far, just avoid souvenir shops and restaurants catering primarily to tourists.

Thankyou, I've ordered Spanish with ease, and I have got myself a copy of 601 Spanish verbs (although it's just for
reference, I don't initially want to focus on grammar). I've been listening to Spanish music and trying to familiarise
myself with the sound of the language. Just very excited about receiving my Assimil course so I can get started!
