At the church I attend we recently got a fellow in from Argentina and I am having trouble following him when he is
talking. Can anyone recommend maybe an audio book or something with audio & a script or text? I just need to develop a passive understanding of it. I have no desire to speak with the accent seeing I am mainly conversing with people from Mexico. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Surprised nobody has answered this yet! My answer is not the greatest, but in the absence of a better one:
You can find Cortázar reading his own stuff on the web, e.g. at that amazing ebook/audiobook site associated with that other fantastic site in Uzbekistan. I haven't tried this and the audio must be quite old, given when the guy died, so I don't know what the sound quality is like. There are also hours and hours of Jorge Bucay reading his own short stories easily found on the web with good quality audio and with written versions also easy to find and use as transcripts. He's from Uruguy, but the accent is very similar to the Buenos Aires accent and I can tell you from personal experience will help you understand that. The stories aren't bad either: dar que pensar. Edit: er, "dan", apparently I don't bother conjugating my verbs anymore. :-( Finally, there are tons of great Argentine TV series online, mate. Why not check some out? I didn't see this one, sorry.
I find that a good way to get familiar with an accent or variant is through exposure, lots of it. So, you're on the right track. Fortunately, Argentina has a lively cinema. You can look for Argentine films with Spanish subtitles. Used dvd's can be found easily on ebay. Some in my collection are, in no particular order: "Un día en el paraíso", "¿Quién dice que es fácil?", "Una estrella y dos cafes", "Un día de suerte", "Liverpool" and an Uruguayan (similar rioplatense accent and usage) film called "25 watts". Also Destinos- episodes 12-18 are set in Argentina and have captions/subtitles available. I'd also listen to Argentine radio/television online. Buena suerte. You can search Argentinian voice actors and then find audio books they have read.

The "Desde el baño" podcast is free and meant to help the intermediate or advanced listener understand Argentinian Spanish. The http://desdeelbano.blogspot.com/ podcasts were created by a woman from Argentina and she likes her language and wants to share it with her listeners.
