Catchy title to attract attention :)

Have any learners of Italian practised it in Malta? If all is well I'm going there soon, and I certainly hope to improve my Italian there. But although many people speak Italian, would they rather speak English since I'm not Italian myself? Share your experiences?

I speak Italian, but as far as I remember I used English in Malta this spring. The only ones addressing us in Italian were actual workers from Italy.

However, I was there for just a couple of days.

Well, but you wanted to speak English. I'm sure a monolingual Italian would get by just fine.
Would I seem weird for insisting on using Italian? Should I pretend my English is really bad?

We just came back from a week in Malta. Most Maltese are very good at Italian and doesn't
mind speaking Italian at all, so go right ahead!

I lived for several months in Malta, and I can assure you that most people you are likely
to have conversations with will have no problem to do so in Italian.
I do think however that most people will speak English if you show great difficulties
when speaking Italian. I do encourage you to pretend like you don't know much English so
you can get the most out of your stay.
Have fun!
