This probably isn't anything new for HTLALers, but thought it might be interesting for
some, regardless.
It's a short article (with audio) from NPR talking about the Mormon Church's process
for

It's a bit funny that the idea of using "context-based teaching" is considered to be a
"novel approach". The Assimil method could be considered a context based approach.
Even if you take their specific approach, I have seen a Hindi course for missionaries
written in the early 60s which used a very similar approach to the Mormon method. Each
chapter was centered around a Bible story, and taught the students to practice hearing
and answering common questions about the story. This was still mixed in with standard
vocab/grammar methods, but the grammar and vocab was all learned with reference to the
story. It struck me that the approach was better than most current textbooks.
