Firefox/Chrome have this nice feature where spelling errors in English are underlined in red. Is there a way for me to get spelling mistakes in German highlighed, in a simple to use editor or even in Firefox? In linux.

I use Opera and just add required languages to its spellchecker's
database.
Simple search in addons for Firefox gives some results, Deutsches
Wörterbuch, for example.

Just download the German dictionary pack for Firefox. When you write something in German, right-click on the textbox and change the language to German. You'll see that Firefox will underline your misspelled words in red.

What Napoleon said. Although if you're running Linux you might be better off downloading the distro language pack instead of the Firefox dictionary. That way you can get a German spell-checker working in all your other software as well (text editor, mail, office package etc).
Also, if you'd like to check your grammar there's LanguageTool Style and Grammar Check, but it's a bit annoying because you can only have it set to one language at a time and you have to right-click and ask it to check. Still, if you have one particular target language you need extra help with at the moment it could be worth a go. I have mine set to Breton and basically use it to quickly check if I got all of my mutations right.
