"east of" and "eastern" in Mandarin

The above area fairly interesting observations. I don't know about Mandarin, but in Cantonese, dongbian and dongbu are overall interchangeable, and some might even argue that dongbian sounds more colloquial than dongbu.

Eastern China perhaps can technically be translated as "東中國", although this particular phrase may sound a bit awkward. A similar phrase 東華 is much more popular though.

Notice though, adding "東" or any of the other 3 characters that denote direction to proper nouns is not uncommon in Chinese, ie. 東京,北京,南京 (eastern capital, northern capital, southern capital).

Here's how I would translate the two:

Beijing is in eastern China 北京在中國的東方/東中國/東部

Japan is to the east of China 日本在中國以東/中國的東邊
