Hi everyone,

I've joined some months ago a project that maybe some of you already know. It's a free (as in free speech and free beer, data are freely available under CC-BY licence) collaborative website.

http://tatoeba.org/

For those of you who don't know this awesome project, let me present it to you. As the title indicates, Tatoeba aims to build a multilingual database of sentences...

(I'm not the creator of Tatoeba, I don't know so much about the exact beginning so I can't tell you)

Present day :

Tatoeba has been improved a lot since its creation. A team of young developers (which I am part of) is coding nights and days (or at least while they can) to expand the project on both social and technical side.

For the moment sentences are available in 23 languages (even if some, eg Shanghainese, have a very low number of sentences).

People can freely add, search, translate sentences but also create lists to classify sentences (tourist sentences / TOEIC related sentences / 是...的 sentences).
Some tools are provided, such as a Japanese to romaji converter and a search engine for kanjis/hanzis.

We know that for the moment the features are quite limited and the system is not perfect. But please understand that it is something we're doing in our free time.

But to be honest for the moment we really lack a community of warm people. It was a choice, because we didn't want to begin promoting the project without something coherent to present to you, and even now, we only restrict to linguistic related website, because we're sure language-enthusiastic learners are the most suitable people to bring an interesting feedback in order to make Tatoeba a project useful for all of language learners.

So now that this project is becoming more and more usable, I (and all the team) really hope this project will become YOUR project (as it's a free project, our main reward is too see it becoming helpful in your everyday learning ;-) )

We are continually working on Tatoeba to bring the best learning experience; and we need you for this, guys! We need awesome people with awesome ideas to make Tatoeba always better! You don’t need to be a hardcore coder! You can be the ideabringer or even make coffee! Just kidding of course :)

All help is welcome :)

Please feel free to ask any question! And don't be shy to suggest any idea We need you feedback!

Hello, must say I'm very happy to see a post about Tatoeba, I've had a look at it a few times since it started up! I think it's an awesome resource, that always seems to be getting better.

What I always felt was lacking was a way to send messages to other people, have profiles and such, I think that would make it a much more social website, you know, with the ability to make "friends" and that kind of thing. Then I think I would have more reason to come back more often, and probably add a sentence or two while I was there! :)

Hi Quabazaa,

Thanks for your support :D

You are talking about the lack of social features, but the ones you are talking about
are actually available.

You can complete your profile from here : http://tatoeba.org/eng/user/profile
You can send private messages to other users if you click on their username (from
anywhere you can), then on "Contact xxxx".
You can also post on the Wall if you want to say that all the users can see :
http://tatoeba.org/eng/wall/

Anyway, please come back more often, it's giving us a reason to keep making Tatoeba
better and better ^_^

Also, is there an option to search for sentences which need translating into a particular language? Eg, a search for sentences which aren't yet translated into that language?

While looking for a few examples sentences for my flashcards, today I discovered the Tatoeba Project (http://tatoeba.org/). A quick search on HTLAL turned up this old thread, so I thought I might post a reminder to bump this topic up for anyone looking for content for studying sentences.

Tatoeba is a great resource! I hope everyone here will take a moment to create or correct a few sentences in your native languages.

Their rules of engagement are here:

They need some more flags. While listening to some "English" audio files, for instance, marked with a British flag,
they were all done by an American.
