@KSAKSA:

I went through Arabic for Life a while back in order to see if I would recommend it to Arabic students. I didn't use it
myself when studying Arabic (it wasn't published back then), but I can answer your questions. :)

I would like to know your thoughts about Arabic for Life. What did you think of the text?

That would be great Jappy58, is it for complete learners or would it also suit intermediate?

I saw on Amazon that it uses 'poems and prose excerpts by well-known Arab writers and thinkers' (which definitely interests me) and I'd also like to know if you had the opportunity to review the accompanying DVD?

How does it compare with Al-Kitaab Vol 1?

Enquiring minds are dying to know what you think of it.

Updated to add: sorry Jappy58, saw your post at http://www.how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.a sp?TID=34547&PN=1&TPN=1 I didn't find this when I went searching the forum earlier. Sounds like a great book. Cheers

@Tanizaki & KSAKSA: I had actually forgotten I had given my opinion on it before, so it's okay! :D

Yeah, I personally preferred Arabic for Life to Al-Kitaab. It's still not really designed completely for self-studying
students (e.g., answers for exercises are absent), but it is still a great course to establish your foundation in Modern
Standard Arabic.

A resource I would recommend after going through Arabic for Life is "Focus on Contemporary Arabic" by Shukri B.
Abed. It's good for improving listening skills and it has transcripts of the topics. As far as online resources go,
Aswaat Arabiyya is excellent as well (though there aren't transcripts).

Yes, & thanks for your opinion! I tried AlKitaab a few years ago when I was concentrating on Arabic and I just
couldn't get into it. It is nice to know that there is an alternative!

Hi All

Just prowling around the net and saw this book: Arabic Stories for Language Learners Traditional Middle-Eastern Tales in Arabic and English By Hezi Brosh, Lutfi Mansur (with DVD)...has anyone a review they'd like to share?

Cheers

Another possibility, just coming onto the market:

Arabiyyat al-Naas

a three-part series being issued by Routledge. (Per Amazon, the first volume is scheduled to be published today.)

Here's the page describing the first volume, from the Routledge website:

http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415516938/

Not having seen the book, I can't comment as to how it compares to the alternatives, but it's nice to see more resources coming onto the market. Routledge books, while not cheap, are usually of pretty high quality, and so I'm optimistic on this one. I also think it's interesting in terms of the way they combine MSA with the Levantine dialect.

ADDENDUM: The first comment on this book to appear on the Amazon.com site is quite negative.
