I have used the advice from Teletandem Brasil Language Exchange Advice to good effect. It is downloadable in pdf format in PT, EN, SP, FR, IT, GE. I don't use it as gospel to follow by the letter, but there is good sound advice in there for a productive exchange. I typically do a 45 to 50 minute exchange with 50% PT and 50% EN with my two Brazilian exchange partners.

I also had a low percentage rate of "keepers". However the chat partners that I still have, have proved to be invaluable. Don't let the percentages sway you. Finding say 1 to 3 chat partners that you work with long term is definitely worth it.
BTW, I screened them. My hello letter told them a little about my background and asked for the equivalent information back from them....eg I am married, have worked in a technical field for many years, am serious about learning the language, etc. The chat partners that I have kept have pretty similiar characteristics.
