While trying to find out how to change the default Kindle dictionary I stumbled upon a web site with several free GPL2 dictionaries for the Kindle ebook reader: Michael Sheldon's free translation dictionaries for the Kindle

Most of them don't contain enough entries to be useful, but the German dictionary with its 160K entries might be helpful for students of German.

The site also explains how to change the default lookup dictionary, which AFAIK is not explained in the Kindle user manual.

There's also another larger Creative Commons licensed Spanish Kindle dictionary that can be downloaded from Dave Slusher's web site.

If you don't have a Kindle, you could use the dictionaries with the free Kindle Windows or IPhone apps, but since these apps don't let you change the default dictionary, you'll need to hack the dictionary header to make it the default lookup dictionary.

I've been using this one since I bought my Kindle and have found it very useful to keep my reading on track. I wish I had not waited to buy a Kindle for studying because after its purchase, my reading stopped being so frustrating and my pace increased dramatically.

Here is the site that provides the info:

That's Dave Slusher's Spanish-English dictionary (my second link). Unfortunately the quality and the selection of the entries isn't that good. I ended up creating my own Spanish-German Kindle dictionary from a free Spanish-German word list.

Sorry about that--I am at work and the links don't work for me here. I could not see the title of the site in your references so I thought I would offer it. Please forgive the duplicate.
That dictionary has really helped me a lot so I wanted people to know it was there.
As to its quality, nothing is perfect, but it is certainly better than what I PAID FOR from Amazon and there doesn't seem to be much lacking for me except in very technical stuff.
