the "expert" you are writing about is nothing but a well-known scammer

I don't contribute to this forum, I am not a linguist, or a professional, but this site is slow and it doesn't allow me to view unread messages (unless there is some hidden way.), When I click on active topics I have to guess wich page I actually read, and search for the new messages. (Let's ignore the fact that when I don't visit the forum for 2 days, I don't get the see more than 100 of the changed threads). And the administrator wants me to pay to get a better user experience. That's not what I'm accustomed to nowadays.
Now imagine an actual linguist having to pass these hurdles, to dispense his advice, free of charge.
I'm no troll. I value the opinion of people on this site enormously, but they deserve a better platform.

Try adblock plus, that'll be already a better experience :) Also, in my browser the visited links have a different colour so I go to the last page I visited :D Active topics work fine for me...

Jintro does have a point, though. This is the only larger forum where there is no "go to the last unread post" button, which can be rather off-putting for new members. The "active topics" functions is nice, but not entirely the same thing.
Is that function only for paying members?

By default active topics show you the new posts since your last visit, though there's a dropdown menu where you can pick 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 hours, a day, a week etc. And I'm not a paid member.

The reason, I think, is that this is a hobby site. It's a place for people who enjoy studying foreign
languages in order to be able to travel, read, watch movies and anime and listen to music from other
countries, and communicate with people from those countries. It is also a welcoming forum for new language
learners, no matter how young, inexperienced, or "jejune" they may be.
I am a professional translator and it has never even crossed my mind that I should be charging for advice I
have given here. Are there really people who are so crudely motivated by money?
I also think the vast majority of visitors to this site are more interested in figuring out German word order,
aspect in Russian, whether Assimil or Linguaphone is better for Spanish, where to find cool DVDs in
Georgian (well, that may just be me), and who is hot in the world of J-Pop, rather than Chomsky's theories
and sociolinguistics.
If the site seems too trivial for some people, there's an easy solution: don't waste your time reading and
posting here. |

I already spend less time reading and posting here than I once did. I have been on the forum nearly five years (about twice as long as you have), and I think its overall quality has declined. When I come on at all, I spend more time looking at early forum posts in preference to more recent offerings, as I alluded to earlier. If people want to ask at approximately three-week intervals why Spanish is considered the easiest to learn, or which is the ugliest language, well, that is no crime. Just don't expect the "experts" referred to by the OP to come running, that's all.

Actually, Active Topics does not show the new posts since my last visit, it shows the threads which have new posts since my last visit. It seems to be impossible, though, to go directly to the new (first unread) post inside a thread since my last visit.
However, if I'm wrong, please let me know.
I don't want to talk about this subject too long in this thread, as it is perhaps off-topic, but I just wanted to make sure that we are talking about the same thing. :)

Oh yeah. But as I said, if you use the same comp, the pages you've already seen will be displayed in a different colour... I suppose it's even possible to sync that between computers if you really need it.
