I don't know if this would be useful for Japanese learners, but I love the concept.

An augmented-reality app that "translates" grown-up newspapers for children has been developed in Japan.

The Tokyo Shimbun, one of the country's biggest daily titles, has worked with advertising firm Dentsu to create the AR News software.

It allows children to hold a smartphone over the newspaper to see a child-friendly version of the text.

Kids app 'translates' grown-up paper into child-friendly articles

Here's a link to the promotional video in English.

I'm skeptical, but if it works, that will help get through that "kanji wall" when reading newspapers.

(I was surprised to see the English video... What's the point?)

It's not clear whether the app modifies the article (I think not), or if it's simply an access point for alternate content that the newspaper has prepared (I think so). I can see how that could help adult viewership (kids don't usually have iPhones...). I imagine this could also give access to translations, or better yet, make magazine articles available to learners with tons of additional information!

I guess it depends on what age of kids the newspapers are targeting, but kids do indeed have iPhones here in Japan. I've seen kids on the train as young as 9 or 10 with smartphones.
