Some very simple benefits are motivation and getting used to the sound of the language. With related languages (Spanish, Italian, Romanian) I also learned way more than I expected by watching football in them.
But also... there are very few adults who don't miss the free time they had at school. prior to retirement, you'll be having less and less free time, so make the most of it. If you don't feel like it, you need more enjoyable methods.

I agree with Serpent that "If you don't feel like it, you need more enjoyable methods."
I just started studying Japanese in November. I work full time and have a lot of other interests, so I know how
you feel about not having any time. The thing is, I'm really enjoying learning Japanese! It feels like a lot of fun and
it's one of the highlights of my day.
Can you find a few ways to start small? Try learning just 10 things you could review every day - things like "good
morning" and "good day" and maybe the words for teacher and school and house and so on. Then, over the
course of the day, review those words in your head. When you get home, say to yourself "ee-yeh" (いえ, house).
Within a few days, you'll have learned those words and you'll be ready for a few more. If you can find a few
phrases to learn every few days, before you know it, you'll have dozens of words at your fingertips and you'll feel
ready to tackle more.
And definitely try Anki. For me, it doesn't even feel like studying, and one or two 10-minute sessions with Anki
have helped me learn all the kana and dozens of words.
Studying doesn't have to feel like studying. Try a few different approaches and see what you can fit into your day.
