What sometimes amaze me, depress me, and motivate me, depending on my mood are the
elaborate posts made by a certain class of people (EMK, Iverson etc).
-amazes me: Very nice elaborate prose.
-depresses me: These people are very busy and thus for them to post such elaborate
responses, they must be able to write well quickly. It would take me hours to compose
anything remotely similar. My English sucks.
-motivates me: These posts are examples of how I would like to write. I try to learn
from the way they are written

I hope I don't depress Gemuse too often. But basically I can write answers fairly quickly when I know the necessary facts - and when I don't I am often pointed towards subjects which might be worth an investigation. For instance I have answered several questions where it was necessary first to read some original stuff in weird things like Old English or Old Saxon or Old High German, and the first couple of times it was really difficult, but it gets easier for each time I try. And that's one of the things which keep me stuck here at HTLAL: I get lured into studying things at the border of my current knowledge areas, and each time I feel that it was worth the effort.

In the past when I was growing up, information is often passed from 1 generation to the next through
parents and teachers. In today's day and age we accepted the Internet as a tool to make our lives easier
such as shopping, tracking our bank info, etc. Some people would upgrade their computer / portable
hardware to the latest year after year and thinks they are smarter than the rest. And then there is a
community of people including myself who believe the computer age is not about getting your hands on
the latest gadgets but to use advice & information that are available for "free" for education purposes.

Many of us still respect the older generation because they were the people who hold knowledge.
However, with Internet being widely available in recent years, it is possible to get ahead by learning on
your own. You learn a lot from people's mistakes and you contribute in a sort of communal / sharing
way. It's like going to a restaurant for a meal that the owner decided to offer to you for free. In return
you pay him a big tip. In an ideal world there is a lot of give and take.

There are people who use social media like Facebook to occupy time by posting photos of their family
dogs or the food they had for lunch. And then there are people like us who are keen on learning and
use social media for educational purposes. One of my other hobby is playing violin with a local band. I
regularly post videos on YouTube both for sharing and for comments. Music teachers and students do
regularly post videos of their performances for educational purposes.
