Something prompted me to read up on Romany (Romani, Carpathian, etc.), the language of the Gypsies, at Wikipedia. It's too bad hardly any outsiders study this language spoken by 4-5 million, because it's quite interesting.
Most linguaphiles probably know that Romany comes from the Indic branch of the Indo-European family. It's most similar to Punjabi, apparently, and not far off from Hindi. Apparently in Romania, where it has some official status and most standardization effort is being done, neologisms are mostly coined from Hindi. "Too cool," I thought, a European language actively borrowing from Hindi. What's more, there is apparently some movement to making Devanagari the standard alphabet for Romany. In addition to its cultural kinship, Devanagari is much better suited to the sounds of Romany than the Latin or Cyrillic alphabets.
