What do you think of creating threads for vocabulary lists? For example, a thread for "colors" and then each member to write colors in his/her native language along with transliteration.

This way, we can learn some words of a certain language without getting into studying that language, we can compare words, etc. It's especially useful for languages lacking resources.

Please write your opinion and that with which categories we should start first: basic phrases, colors, basic adjectives, basic adverbs, family, etc.

I think this is a great idea, but before we start to create a lot of threads, it would be good to define better which categories we would want.

For example, a very common list I have with me is "family" (mother, father... grandson, etc) in English/Spanish/Portuguese/French/Italian.

I have another one with more "rare" words, related to chess (chess pieces, movements, etc) in those languages. This list is harder to find in the internet, but it's also less interesting to most of the learners.

Good idea, though it will mean some pretty long posts. We had something of that kind in the thread about distinct family words, where I for my part tried to give the complete list of family members in Danish. But it should be done in a more systematic way to be really useful.

Thanks for your replies.

Don't you think it's better to have a separate category (room) for this purpose?

As for showing pronunciation, should we use IPA or just a Romanization suffices?

Is there a special reason why you all are so enthusiastic about comparing a few words?
I think we all know that languages like French, Spanish, Italian, etc. have a lot in common.
Okay, it becomes a bit more complex when talking about Singhalese or Bengali words, but what is so interesting about that? So why making such a fuss about it?

Furthermore, these lists won´t help anyone to learn a language, no matter if it is English or some kind of Austronesian dialect that is spoken on one small island in French Polynesia or wherever only.

Yes, it´s very good idea to create threads for vocabulary lists. It´s important to show them not only specially for the beginner learners but everyone for more reference.

And how about Latin to familiarize?

This link should be of interest. Words in dozens of languages by category.

As much as I like the idea, I realize that we could end up with lots and lots of threads. A separate category or room would be best.
