This is something I have always wondered about. Are these really Gaelic accents? In other words if a native Gaelic speaker learns English, would their accent in English resemble the accents Irish and Scottish people have? If so, I find it fascinating that these accents have been retained for centuries, even though there are hardly any native Gaelic speakers anymore.

Although I don't really hear the accents as "Gaelic" English, there is some influence according to Wikipedia (more in Irish English):

if you ever go to ireland and go in an old irish pub and wait till some of the guest are a bit drunk ("guinness is good for you haha ^^) then go and ask them for some old irish stories, they will be happy to tell and with the time and the alcohol you will be surprised of the english changing into a very interesting (sometimes hard to understand) accent - there you have irish english :)
(yes a very "practical" tip but believe me it's true!)

Sounds like fun! I would love to sit in an old Irish pub and listen to the old timers tell stories.
