I was very impressed with German With Ease... so for Russian I tried the newest Assimil "Le Russe" but was disappointed that there did not appear to be as much content in the new version as in the older version German With Ease (as many have mentioned).
So I just ordered the oldest Russian version I could find on amazon.fr, "Le Nouveau Russe Sans Peine." Can someone please encourage me that this version has as much content as German With Ease and more than Le Russe... I am anxiously awaiting its arrival in the mail!

I don't think it has that much. It'll be better than Le Russe, but not as good as Le Russe Sans Peine from the 50's or 60's.

Yeah; look for Russe sans Peine (not the Nouvelle version), or Russisch ohne Mühe (70s version). There is also a '51 version in English, Russian without Toil, which is also quite good.

I have the audio for this course and the book in an Italian base and it's painfully slow, in addition the content is very thin compared to the Russisch ohne Mühe (originally "Le Russe sans peine") course.

I have all 4 editions, I'd classify them as, from best to worst:
(Best) Le Russe sans peine (from 1971)
Le Russe (2007)
Le Russe without toil (1951)
Le Nouveau Russe Sans Peine (1980's) (Worst of all 4)

I'm going through the 1951 Russian w/o Toil and the course is absolutely fantastic (with the exception of the
terrible audio). In fact, I think it's much better than the German course. Not only are new grammatical structures
drilled at the end of each dialogue, the grammar explanations are very clear unlike the German course, and there
are little notes scattered throughout to help motivate you - a nice touch. By the end of the book there are dialogues
from Tolstoy and Chekhov. Only problem I have with it is that it progresses very fast, but I've gotten used to it. I
have the new 2011 English course (not sure which French one that is) it's not that great. I've heard the 70s French
course is excellent as well.
So far, my first 2 months of Russian have been much smoother sailing than my first 2 months of German, however,
this will probably change very quickly.

Hi,
I have the 51, 71 and 2000 version: the 51 is the best of them, and the French version is much better than the English one (I have the two versions)
I bought the 51 versions for 2 euros on priceminister :)

Thanks for your comments, I'll study a little more the 1951 Russian w/o Toil.
I just wonder what are the main changes in Russian, regarding the ortography, from this
edition to nowadays. I really prefer the 1951 version, but I don't know how much is the
Russian in this version 'dated'...
