If you get anki, you can download pre-made core2000 / core6000 decks from the online shared decks. There is also a link to the media that goes with it, mp3's for 99% of the cards and images for core2000. I have only made my way through around 280 so far, but have only found one missing mp3 so far.

I can attest to the awesomeness anki. It's in many ways better than smartfm. (No internet needed, better more manipuable SRS algorithm, better control over decks and cards, can copy and paste text into and out of the application, etc.)

Please, how do I get this "anki" and the Japanese material? Do they include readings and sample sentences like iKnow? How many kanji do they teach? Now that I have been intensively using iKnow before the free period expires I really like it, but I don't pay for internet material, and even if I did ~10USD a month is on the expensive side.

Try google, bud.. It's not a program like, say KO2K1, it's a free flashcard software.The best way to learn about it is to visit the website and see the tutorials. It's not a question of "how many kanji do they teach?". All decks are commnity uploaded, but someone has taken the time to upload the Core2000 decks.
