My first affair, like many of my generation was with that sophisticated French lady, the mere sound of her voice caused my heart to beat faster, colours seemed brighter, until she introduced me to her Latin grandmother. I was a dutiful lover to both of them, sharing my affections.
I was introduced to a distant German cousin but we really didn't get on with each other, she just couldn't set me alight like the Gallic lady.
Then to my chagrin I bumped into a Japanese lady and courted her with the energy of youth but in a haphazard way. We went all the way but I had no technique. At college I dated Italian on the side before I moved in with an Arabic lady and her Russian housekeeper. I found the Semitic lady devastatingly attractive but the Slavic lady was a little coarse for my tongue. As someone once said, a little bit of rough is fine now and again. I had plenty of energy to keep them both on the boil. Once the relationship with those two had settled down I was forced into an arranged marriage with that German. I never did love her but achieved what I would call a level of friendship where we were comfortable with each other and we could do all the functional things that a couple need to do. We even had some kinky weekends with her Germanic relatives.
I then took my two wives to see my Italian pen friend who I adored from afar. We dated off and on. The other two didn't mind, they are both very open minded.
Things finally broke up with Arabic and Russian and I dated willy-nilly, a little French here a little Italian there though I occasionally communicate with the Arabic and Russian ladies but just as good friends now.
Recently I started seeing a Spanish girl, who is cheeky, sometimes a little fussy but I can't help that she reminds me of my Italian friend. At the moment we are going at it hammer and tongs but I do keep seeing the French woman on TV and in the newspapers which tugs at my heart strings.
My roving eye has caused me to examine a few others but it is mainly the shapes that I am admiring, those pointed Runes and curvaceous Devanagari. When the Spanish one and I have gone all the way I will open my little black book and give one of the others a call. In my dreams I will meet a stranger and have an intense and passionate fling.
Though I am older now and my energy levels have dropped I learned so much from the others that my technique has improved a great deal and I can be persuasive enough to get to third base quickly, even if we don't go all the way every time.
Edit for Spelling

I was never married to Italian, but studying it formally, I found myself thinking, "What is the point of this freaking language?!" University killed it for me.

I have to say that everytime I read the sentence "she even adores my dog", I honestly
can't stop laughing.

It's a shame but studying a language formally can really be what puts you off it. Gods
forbid you have to do tests or grades or anything like that with a language. That can
be a monstrous demoraliser.

My first fling was with French but my arranged marriage to Spanish complicated things and I have hardly revisited the language since 2000. I have found almost no compelling reason to come back to French but daydream about it from time to time. My studies of other Latin languages have made it so I can actually read French better now than I could at university when I was taking classes in it.
My next affair was with Italian. With no real outlet to use it, and not feeling like it was much of a challenge, I left Italian to weep with French. Chinese was an ungrateful mistress but I tried to court her only with podcasts of Chinesepod, totally insufficient. Chinese is actually a language I could see myself using and I have bought quite a few materials. I would like to go back and conqueror her when the time is right.
I would actually like to go back to French and Italian some day, after Chinese and probably Afrikaans/Dutch, but I am determined not to stop with German until I am moderately fluent which will probably be another six months to a year.
