I found out by chance that the free Mobipocket Reader has a hidden popup dictionary feature that works much better than the Windows StarDict dictionary software and decided to convert the dictionary that I created some time ago from the Buckwalter POS tagger to the Mobipocket format. I also added a simple inflection index to both dictionaries.

Here are the links to both formats:

StarDict
Mobipocket

For more information see the readme file in the zip files.

Great work!

I just have a note on the Readme file. You wrote:

Quote:
. For example, طَرَحَ was translated as submit/suggest/propose in the original
corpus.
However, the most common translation is to throw, to discard etc.

As an Arabic native speaker, the first meaning that came you my mind for طَرَحَ is
"proposed" or "suggested". Yes, discard is a common meaning but it's not the most
common.

It also means subtract (or subtracted to be more accurate).

Thanks for your valuable feedback. I had changed the translation for this one entry only, because in the novels that I've read so far طَرَحَ was usually used with this meaning and also because the Wehr dictionary primarily lists this meaning.
However, because of your input I decided to change the translation back to their original translations from the corpus (i.e. submit/suggest/propose) and posted new Mobi and StarDict files. (I already updated the links in my original post.)

Thank you for your quick response.

Can I use your StarDict dictionary to create other Arabic dictionaries (e.g. Arabic-
English dictionary with Arabic examples or Arabic-Japanese dictionary)?

As far as I know, StarDict format is open source, but I don't have any idea how to edit
it. Unlike Buckwalter's original data, it is not plain text and cannot be opened in
Notepad for example.

Due to the scarcity of Ar-En dictionaries with Arabic example sentences, I want to
create one. It will be in an open source format. The only Arabic-English dictionary
with Arabic examples is this:

http://www.kanji.org/kanji/dictionaries/cald/cald_overview.p df

But it's commercial and not published yet.

Sure. I'd love to see more free Arabic learning material. I'll post the source file and some instructions and PM you the details.
