Okay, so aspect pairs are an artificial construct and should be taken with a grain of salt. I think I understand much better now. Thanks for taking the time to reply, everyone!
EDIT: Just one more question - if I want to express that someone lived and died two hundred years ago (completed action in the past), can I use жить, or should I look for a perfective verb to express that?

Yes, you must use жить.
