BTW, I just checked the biographical data of Alphonse Chérel, who founded Assimil and wrote most of the early courses, and found out that he died in 1956.

This means that all courses written exclusively by him are already in the Public Domain in Life+50 countries (e.g. Canada) and will become PD in Life+70 countries in 2027.

Apropos Chérel, I've found an interesting Arte TV article about the first English and German Assimil courses that shows that Chérel definitely had a sense of humor:
