I'm usually more of the mind about cutting to the chase. In this case, just go right into Uzbek if you really want to learn it - no need to look for a discount first. Why make the learning process more circuitous?

A lot of people in Uzbek and other parts of Central Asia speak Russian in addition to their native tongues. While Russian may not give much of a discount for learning Uzbek, it certainly wouldn't hurt to learn Russian if you want to talk to some Uzbek friends or travel over to the country.

Nah, you wouldn't get any benefit (except a few loan words) for Uzbek from learning Russian, Arabic or Persian. These three are totally different languages than Uzbek (Uzbek is a Turkic language, Russian is a Slavic, Arabic a Semitic, and Persian an Indo-European language).

Ilhan

Well, there's more than just a few. Persian (and Arabic laundered through Persian) loan words make up as much as 40-50% of the Uzbek lexicon, from what I've read.

If you want to learn Uzbek, then learn Uzbek.
Learning Arabic, Persian and Russian may help a little but learning those three languages will take a LOT of time. If you're really interested in learning Uzbek, you might as well just start learning rather than wait till you've mastered the other three languages.
Alternatively, learn Turkish. Uzbek is a Turkic language so you might find that a better stepping stone.

Sure, it'll help you with vocabulary, but not with grammar in any way. It's true that Turkish is the optimal "gateway" language to Uzbek, for which there exist relatively few learning resources.
Don't underestimate the difficulty of Persian! Although it's morphologically easy, it'll take you years to master.

Yeah you are right, even 30% of Turkish is made up of Persian and Arabic words, as far as I know. But hey, both German and English have been strongly influenced by French (vocabulary) and still learning French won't help you a lot with English or German.

Hello, my name is ShifuYaku, and I am currently learning Uzbek as my second language. I will be visiting
Uzbekistan next year, and I was really wondering if there was an easier way to learn any language. I need to learn
more about this language before May of next year. :)
