Things are still going swimmingly. I went through FSI unit 6 this week and I've gone throught the first two chapters of the first Harry Potter book. I also started reading Essential Spanish Grammar (Resnick). I find all the grammar rules to be confusing, but I figure if I just keep reading over it eventually it will stick. I also bought Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses and Practice Makes Perfect Pronouns and Prepositions, which I will be starting this week.

Finished FSI unit 7 this week. I tried to up the intensity a bit this week, so I ended up only going through it twice, but I think it had more effect than just blazing through several times. I started PMP Spanish Verb tenses, and I'm surprised to say that I am really enjoying it. I think the workbook aspect gives a greater sense of accomplishment then the FSI. I was only able to get through the third chapter of Harry Potter this week. I realized that I really need to go back through chpts 1-3 and write out all the vocabulary I didn't know before I continue on. I'm still working through the 1000 most common Spanish words with Anki, right now I'm about 3/4 of the way through.

FSI is so boring! I know that it is (or would be, lol) helping, but whenever I think about doing it I just run off and watch a British comedy instead. So I only ended up getting through unit 8 once this past week, so I won't be moving on to unit 9 quit yet. I love the grammar workbooks and I'm still going strong with Anki, so I am making some progress. I was able to download Behind the Wheel Spanish this week, but I'm not too impressed with it. They speak too slow. I know I'm comparing it to FSI which is so fast that it can be dificult to distinguish individual words, but BtW is just ridiculously slow. But I'm guess it will be more beneficial to listen to BtW on my hour commute then to do nothing.
I've also been listening to a lot of Spanish music. Pandora makes it so easy, and I've got a couple of CDs (I really like Juanes & Mana). I also watched Pan's Labyrinth this week. I know that watching with Enligh subtitles doesn't really help, but the story was really intesting and I wanted to know what was going on! But I've got my own copy and now that I know the story I can go back and try watching it with just Spanish subtitles.

Okay, so I really slacked off over the past two months (personal/work stuff can do that do you!), but I've rearranged my priorities and I'm ready to fully commit to my language learning. My main goal is to achieve basic fluency in Spanish and to start on German. I'm still working on my specific goal/checkpoints, but I plan to have them all fleshed out by the end of this week. Then I'll start in with weekly updates (probably Sunday or Mondays).
Sometime I think I may have too many language learning books, and I don't quite know what to do with them. I've bought a bunch of the Practice Makes Perfect Workbooks, but I'm not sure if I should try to do a little out of each, or if I should just go through one at a time. Any suggestions? I have Spanish Pronouns & Prepositions, Spanish Verb Tenses, Spanish Sentence Builder, Spanish Vocabulary, and Complete Spanish Grammar. I also have the Big Red Books of Spanish Verbs, Vocabulary & Idioms, but again I am unsure how to best utilize these. Apparently my study skills are practically nonexistent. I was able to breeze through college without any effort whatsoever, but language learning doesn't come naturally to me. If anyone has any suggestions for strengthening my study skills I would greatly appreciate it...personal experience, websites, additional books (lol)...thanks!

You sound like your maybe falling into the trap of thinking there is a magical textbook
that you need to find and then you'll reach your goals. Diversity is good but there
comes a point where if your never really completing an individual course, you're not
really making progress by jumping ship to something else. Why don't you ditch the idea
of learning German for now and concentrate on one Spanish, take one substantial course
and work through it - maybe supplementing it with other things such as music, reading
news articles on line, having online chats etc.
I don't mean to be harsh but when I started learning a foreign language I did exactly
this, thinking book 'x' is better than book 'y' and dropping and switching things all
the time and when you look back you realise your not really going anywhere. Maybe this
is in part the reason for your 'slacking off'. Anyways, I would recommened using this
time of renewed motiviation to take stock of your best study tools and as you have
asked above, how to utilise them most effectively.
Good luck with your studies.
