I'm excited to finally start a log and hopefully take my language studies more
seriously.
A little about me: I'm a 19-year-old (20 next month!) college student in the US double-
majoring in Middle Eastern and Religious Studies.
Arabic: Studying Arabic is very important for my major at school. I started
learning Arabic in June, when I attended an intensive language program for 7 weeks that
covered two semesters worth of Arabic. Over the fall semester I took the first semester
of the second level of Arabic and we ended at the beginning of chapter 17 in the first
Al-Kitaab book. This year, I'd really like to supplement my school studies and learn
more Arabic on my own. I especially want to improve my listening.
Dutch: I actually spoke Dutch as a child when my family lived in the Netherlands
for a few years. I don't remember any of it, but my dad still speaks the language at a
near-native level (someone to practice with!). Sometimes he'll speak to me in Dutch
slowly and I'll understand the meaning of what he's telling me, just not a translation
of each individual world, if that makes any sense. I don't know if this is because I
used to be able to speak it or if it's just due to the large number of cognates. I'm
participating in the January Dutch Challenge and I'd really like to study as much Dutch
as I can over my winter break before school starts again (Jan 19) and then study a bit
each day when I'm back at school.
Materials: For Arabic, I plan on going back through my notes from the
semester and inputting all of the vocab my teacher gave to us that is not in Al-Kitaab
into an Anki deck. I also want to do 30 minutes of active listening practice each day.
For Dutch, I have a pretty good little collection of resources, so I think I'll start
going through Assimil and if I get bored, let myself try out the different books and
CDs I have.

Hey marvellgirl. Your major(s) sound pretty interesting, and I think it's cool that you're studying Arabic outside of
school.
Good luck with TAC and I look forward to following your log!

Thanks for the support!
Yesterday, I did the first chapter in Assimil's Dutch with Ease and today I did the
second one. I put in the words from both along with some words and phrases from the first
chapter of Teach Yourself. I also went through over 500 bacaklogged cards on my Arabic
Anki deck.
Dutch: 2 hours (1 yesterday, 1 today)
Arabic: 30 minutes

Hi Marvelgirll, good luck with your studies and I look forward to reading your log this year. If you spoke Dutch fluently as a child, than you probably have a good accent, right?

Christmas and having family friends visiting us really threw off my studies, but today I
got back on track. I managed to get through all 800 of my Arabic Anki cards and did the
second and third chapters of Assimil.
Dutch: 2 hours
Arabic: 1 hour

Thank you! I'm not sure how good my accent is yet. I feel like the sounds aren't
very difficult like I initially did with Arabic, but I'm sure it is still far from
perfect. My dad corrects my pronunciation if I say something wrong to him, so that should
hopefully help.
