Ugh, still not on track with my studies. Right now I'm on my grandparents' boat, visiting
them for the week. I've really only been managing to keep up with Anki but I'm hoping to
have more frequent computer access now and do on chapter of Assimil until school starts
again. Wish me luck!

I'm feeling a bit better already. Yesterday I did Assimil chapter 4 and the first unit of
Michel Thomas :)
Dutch: 2 hours
Arabic: 30 minutes

Ah, getting back to school has been crazy. I'm really disappointed with how little I've
been accomplishing language-wise ):
I had my first two Arabic classes and I still feel like my listening skills are hopeless.
I have such a difficult time understanding anything the teacher says.
I did Assimil Lesson 5 today for Dutch, as well as went through Anki for both Arabic and
Dutch.
Dutch: 1 hour
Arabic: 30 minutes

Hi marvelgirll, good luck with your language studies!! Looking forward to your posts as
well. Also, are you studying both MSA and Levantine simultaneously? Are they very
different?

Thanks! I'm not really studying Levantine dialect right now. I picked some up while I was
in Lebanon over the summer and I intend to study in Syria next spring (2012), so I'll
probably devote more time to it this upcoming summer and fall. As far as differences go,
the grammar is much simpler and there are often different words for things. I think with
more MSA under my belt it will be much easier to pick up.

They're quite different at first, mainly for the basic stuff, but the more complex you need to be, and the more you'll use MSA in dialectal :)
For example "atakalam al-lughat al-arabiya" is "behki arabiy", "laakin" becomes "bas", "limaazha" becomes "leysh", etc. I remember having to translate an MSA extract in dialectal Arabic (it was a stupid exercise, urgh), and quite a lot of if was different.
