Hi marvelgirll, good luck with your language studies!! Looking
forward to your posts as
well. Also, are you studying both MSA and Levantine simultaneously? Are they very
different? |

Thanks! I'm not really studying Levantine dialect right now. I picked some up while I was
in Lebanon over the summer and I intend to study in Syria next spring (2012), so I'll
probably devote more time to it this upcoming summer and fall. As far as differences go,
the grammar is much simpler and there are often different words for things. I think with
more MSA under my belt it will be much easier to pick up. |

If you do go to Syria and especially Damascus, there's a bookshop on Qaimaryeh (the main street in the Old City of Damascus that isn't Straight Street) called Shado bookshop, and the shop owner offers quite good tuition for a reasonable price (in dialectal). I also have the details of an excellent MSA private teacher if you're looking at private lessons (great complement if you study at the university), and if you can choose where to study, the university is the most famous place, but Abu Nour is meant to be excellent, and really cheap (I think it's something like $100/month).

I'm the worst teammate ever! I have been so bad about studying lately. The semester got
real busy real fast. I just got back an Arabic test that I did awful on (I got a C). I
really need to step it up, starting today. I'm going to work on reading a children's book
now. Dutch is going to have to be on the back burner until after finals in May.

Sounds difficult! I think I give my own Arabic a C right now too if it makes you feel any better! :) Good luck and don't give up :)

I'm finally done with the semester and back home, so it's time to begin seriously
studying Arabic on my own again (not just in the classroom). It's so easy for to me to
become overwhelmed during the semester, but now I have no excuse. I'm going to come up
with some sort of study plan and update!

It's been a while, but I'm back! I've been interning since I got out of school in May
and soon after decided to take a night class. It made for some very long days (up at 6
am and home from my class at 10:30 pm) but now I'm finally back to a normal schedule.
I'm hoping that before school starts (Aug 24), I can accomplish something for
languages.
Over the weekend I did Pimsleur units 1-3 for Dutch and I signed up for Skype lessons
for
Arabic. I really just want someone to practice speaking with before school starts while
I go over grammar, vocab and such on my own.
I asked my dad at dinner the other day if he would speak Dutch with me for practice
after I study a bit more and he said "Nee". When I pouted and asked why, he said he was
saying the Korean "ne" (so, yes!!) which is a bit of a joke since I was born in Korea.
So, now I have my materials together and a person to speak with for each language. I'm
ready to finally take advantage of the rest of my summer.

Today I did unit 4 for Pimsleur Dutch. Tomorrow is my first Skype lesson for Arabic. I'm
excited and a little nervous. I definitely need to skim through some Al Kitaab
beforehand.
