The first Skype lesson went well. I told my teacher that I'd really like to focus on
listening and speaking (by far my two weakest skills). She gave me this link for videos
that we'll be working with:

deo_s.php (in case anyone else finds them useful). I'm kind of disappointed that I
can't even understand the beginner videos.
Off do my homework!

Had my second Skype lesson last night! We went over my homework and watched another video
together. To help me with listening, the teacher has me listen to the video once, writing
down all of the words I recognize. Then, I go through line by line, translating. If I
don't know a word of phrase, she helps me. I was surprised by how much of the second
video I understood. It actually gave me some confidence. After going through the video
line by line, it's a little bit thrilling to listen straight through again and understand
everything.

I think I'm going to start keeping track of time I spend studying again, too. I find it
motivating.

I didn't know whether to include the music listening or not. My brain was too tired on
the metro in the morning for Pimsleur and now I'm hooked on Dutch rap! I tried to pay
attention for words I could recognize. When I came home from work, I showed my dad my
favorite song to see if he would be able to understand it. He laughed at how vulgar it
is. I like to test his Dutch.. gotta make sure he stays at high level so I can practice
speaking with him (hopefully) soon! ;)

Sounds like you are making great progress!! How are your Skype lessons going? Are they
very useful? What kind of routine does your teacher have? Perhaps it is something I
should try!
I think you can definitely count music, especially if you are paying attention to the
lyrics. I think it's a great way to help vocab to stick! Best of luck and hopefully
you'll be speaking Dutch with your dad in no time :)

I'm back! I went to visit a friend in New Jersey and then got busy getting ready to
head back to school (excuses, excuses). Now I'm back and the first day of classes was
yesterday!
I'm taking Arabic 301 this semester, so it only meets twice per week for 1.5 hours,
which definitely isn't enough time. Unfortunately, I had to end the Skype lessons (too
pricey) so in addition to my homework for class, I'll need to do outside study.
I'm really excited because I know a native Dutch speaker at school now! This will
definitely be helpful if I can ever get up the nerve to actually speak..
I did a bit of Dutch study yesterday for fun. (And in order to procrastinate on
readings for school.)
