Ah yes, those last few days of summer before the school year starts again, quite agonizing. Hope your schedule settles down into something comfortable for you.

Blind shadowing is speaking along with the audio without referring the text? I think this is a technique simultaneous translators use, is that right? I have tried this while riding a stationary bike, but felt like I was just mumbling nonsense rather than understanding. Maybe I was doing it wrong or the material was above my level. It sounds like you are careful to select your material.

I am truly astounded and very impressed by your (and others') ability to do Anki/flashcards, which I unfortunately find to be hellish. Alas.

You, AlOlaf and a few others have recommended reading out loud, so I think I will try it. Can't hurt, right?

I don't know if translators use it, I found it through Alexander Arguelles' website:

You will want to shadow without a book when you are in the very initial stages of , focusing on phonetics only (= "blind shadowing"),

focusing on the phonetics is the only thing that is helping me to "get" French. I think that is the real trick to these romance languages. I have to treat it as a song because if I focus on grammar, words, etc. I don't learn it -- only read it. I don't want to end up sounding like "une vache espanol", as they say.

I've wasted -so much- time on materials that are way too advanced for me (the adaptation "Tout est sous contrôle" just to name one). So your right, now I'm really careful to pick materials that are one level below. I have audio books that are B1 and I'm so busy trying to keep pace that it just seems like a mechanical excercise. I have to stop and reflect on what I'm saying and once I do that I'm thrown off. With A2 I've made the happy discovery that I can blind shadow and >click< I understand it at the same time! yea, it fits! Luckily these little audio books are not very expensive at all. It pays to read the Amazon reviews. It's helpful to get a report on the book's difficulty and whether the pace matches any CEFR level it may have listed.

It's a bit too premature to say I've been successful with Anki. I've tried it before and deleted hours and hours of work because I couldn't stand that weird sense of obligation. Time will tell!

This is also something that I've only done sporadically. But AlOlaf seems to have made good progress with his Harry Potter book, so I decided to do it with the stuff I don't have CDs for.

This past week was absolutely strenuous -- no time to study at all. I think things will settle down a bit soon. It's always difficult the first week of school...

I was hoping to finish the Einsendeaufgabe SKR05N "Textformulierungen" today, but it's getting late and I haven't studied French yet.

Briefformulierungen are really difficult for me, but right now all I have to do is umschreiben. I have to improve ugly phrases like this:

"Die zahlenmäßige Erfassung solcher Fälle wird kaum möglich sein"
"Bei Außerbetriebsetzung der Maschine hat Meldung an den Betriebsleiter zu erfolgen"
-- According to my assignment, I have to make those sentences it a little bit easier to read.

I sent one set of Übungen in to my tutor already. I need all the help I can get. I'm not a very good business-letter-writer. I'll have to practice a lot.

I'll try to get through Anki tonight, but I think I'd rather workout. I received my new DVD, "S3", packed and signed by celeb yoga/pilates Trainer, Kristin McGee herself! I -have- to try it out!

Reineke's Challenge: 100 posts in French and German

I'd better get started with this one. I think it was 100 posts... but I don't have the link to Serpent's thread for this particular challenge... ach, egal.

Link to very bad French business letter waiting for a correction.

I translated it from a letter out of my Lernheft. I figure it would be good practice for me. Now I have to write something in German. Business letters copied from a book probably don't count.

Mal sehen. *gähn* Heute morgen muss ich zur Post. Dann komme ich nach Hause und werde das Essen vorbereiten. Ich habe eine Privatschülerin von 14:30 bis 15:30, dann fahre ich meine jungste Tochter zu ihrer AG. Danach werde ich mich für einen Elternabend frisch machen. Ein Elternabend dauert meistens zwischen 1-2 Stunden. Der Beginn ist um 19:00. Zwischendurch werde ich meine Anki-Stapel durchgehen. Ich muss noch meinen Übungstext zum PC-Schnellschreiben machen. okay das war's.

edit: it's about 11:00 and I just got back - whew. I have a correction from lang-8 already. Not too bad! Yea for linguee! I plan to copy all important phrases (Bausteine) and plop them in Anki.

Here's the last set of Aufgaben which were corrected by my tutor. I was supposed to change stuffy, unübersichtliche business phrases into something more readable and clear. Here are the results:


Aufgabe1: "Wir würden uns freuen, Ihren geschätzten Auftrag zu erhalten."
Ich habe verbessert: "Über Ihren Auftrag freuen wir uns."
Mein Tutor: Das ist perfekt!

Aufgabe2: "Bezug nehmend auf Ihre Bestellung vom ... mössen wir Ihnen leider mitteilen, dass..."
ich habe verbessert: "Auf ihre Bestellung vom… teilen wir Ihnen bedauerlich mit..." Mein tutor: Besser: Leider können wir Ihre Bestellung vom ... ... ....
    
Aufgabe3. "Wir werden unser Bestmögliches tun, um die Ware zu Ihrer vollsten Zufriedenheit auszuliefern"
Ich habe verbessert: "Wir bemühen uns, die Ware pünktlich und zuverlässig abzuliefern."
Mein tutor: Wenn Sie statt "abzuliefern" "auszuliefern" schreiben, ist es so gut!
    
Aufgabe4. "Hinsichtich der Errichtung eines neuen Geschäftshauses wurden seitesn der Stadtverwaltung keine Einwendungen erhoben, vielmehr wurde der Plan nach hinreichender Prüfung durch die betreffenden Gremien in positivem Sinne beurteilt"
Ich habe verbessert: "Bei der Eröffnung des neuen Geschäftshauses hatte die Stadtverwaltung nichts einzuwenden."
Mein tutor: Das stimmt so nicht ganz. Die Stadtverwaltung ist ja mit dem Bau (Errichten) des Geschäftshauses einverstanden (und nicht mit der Eröffnung). Das Haus muss ja erst gebaut werden, bevor es eröffnet werden kann. Und so ist's besser: Die Stadtverwaltung ist mit dem Bau eines neuen Geschäftshauses einverstanden.

Ich habe verbessert: "Nach sorgfältiger Prüfung, haben die betreffenden Gremien den Plan positiv beurteilt."
Mein Tutor: Diesen Satz haben Sie sehr schön formuliert! Nur das Komma nach "Prüfung" ist zu viel. Um eine Substantivierung zu vermeiden, könnte man den Satz auch so formulieren: Die Gremien haben den Plan sorgfältig geprüft und bewilligt.

Aufgabe5. "Seitens des Ministeriums wurde Einspruch erhoben."
Ich habe verbessert: "Das Ministerium erhob Einspruch."
Mein Tutor: Prima!
    
Aufgabe6: "Mit Bezug auf Ihr geschätztes Schreiben bitten wir Sie höflichst um Ihren werten Besuch."
ich habe verbessert: "Wir beziehen uns auf Ihr Schreiben und bitten um Ihren Besuch." Mein Tutor: Auch prima! Man könnte es auch so formulieren: Vielen Dank für Ihr Schreiben. Wir freuen uns auf Ihren Besuch.
    
Aufgabe 7: "Anlässlich seines Geburtstages haben wir ihm einen erstklassigen Füller geschenkt."
Ich habe verbessert: "Für seinen Geburtstag haben wir ihm einen Füller geschenkt."
Mein Tutor: "Fast gut! Besser ist: Zu seinem Geburtstag haben wir ihm einen wertvollen Füller geschenkt."

So there were a few problems there but nothing serious. I'll try to find French translations of -some of these-. Time to feed Anki more sentences!

Thanks! I'm trying to stay on top of this TAC-thing. It's not easy ;)

I have to find a way to keep track of these 100 letters I plan to write *chuckle*, I have so many things to keep track of as it is. Some people make Excel charts, some just write it down... what to do.

I guess I'll just update here every once and a while. Everything is at lang-8. I translated a B2 - business letter - from French into German. That was considerably easier than the other way around! But I have these damn Flüchtigkeitsfehler that keep creeping in. Verb-Subject Übereinstimmung, for example GRRR ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)    

I could wait a day between writing and sending, giving myself extra time to check through it. The problem is, that never works on a test. I'll have to research that one. How to keep mistakes from creeping into your writing. I'll report what I find..

HOW TO AVOID MISTAKES WRITING German, or
WIE MAN DEN FEHLERTEUFEL JAGT




(Other than concentrating harder, or getting enough sleep which we know anyway!)

TIP 1: When my daughter writes dictation in the school the teacher has her write out her mistakes 3 times. For example: "nich" instead of "nicht". She writes: "nich, nich, nich" on a separate piece of paper. Do this for all misspellings. (It might be worth a try!)

TIP 2: When proofreading, cover up everything except one sentence. Read the sentence out loud or backwards.

TIP 3: When reading out loud, learn to pay attention to how the word is spoken; this can help with spelling. There are a lot of rules:

short-sounding vowel before double consonants: pfiffig, schwirren, lallen, kommen, lassen. When in doubt whether it's doubled, separate the word root and say it out loud: Kap-pe, Rit-ter, Map-pe,

"s" after long-sounding vowel or dipthongs (ie, eu, au, äu): Gas, Besen, Dose, Pause, Glas

"ss" (Schluss-ss, Scharfes ss) after short-sounding vowel: Fluss , Kuss, Tasse, Reisepass, Missverständnis

"ß" after long-sounding vowels and dipthongs and makes a sharper s-sound: Maß, Gruß, schießen, schließen, heißen, zerreißen, genießen, draußen, Strauß, süß, bloß, stoßen, weiß, heiß

No "tz" afer a dipthong: Geiz, Kreuz

No "ck" after a consonant: stark, Schrank

Vowels that are lengthened (lengthend=gedehnt, spoken long, drawn out): Rat, Qual, Salat, Samen, Schale, Wal, las, Name, Dame, jagen

Vowels that are lengthened "ah": Zahn, Rahm, Fahren, Wahl, Jahr, Bahn, Sahne, lahm, ihn, ihm, ihr, ihnen

Vowels that are lengthened "aa": Paar, Saat, Aal, Waage, Haar, Saal

Vowels that are lengthened "ee": Seele, Schnee, Meer, Beet, Fee, Idee, Kaffee, Tee, leer, Allee

Vowels that are lengthened "ie": Fieber, Ziel, ließ, Bier, Spiegel, Stiefel, Dieb, Dienst, rief, tief, Beispiel, Niere

Vowels that are lengthened "eh": Mehl, dehnen, mehr, sehr, befehlen, Ehre, fehlen, stehlen, angenehm, wehren

end or ent? --
"end" at the beginning means "final"; endlich, endlos, endgültig

"ends": nirgends, eilends, zusehends, vollends, aber: eigens, unversehens

"ent" is a prefix entlaufen, entbehren

z or tz? --

tz after simple, short vowels: Matratze, Katze, Platz, -aber-: Kapuze, Strapaze, Brezel, duzen, Spaziergang

tz after short-sounding umlauts: Mütze, Stütze, -aber-: Kürzel, Würze

NO tz after consonants or dipthongs! - a common mistake: "Artzt"

z after consonants and dipthongs: Salz, Arzt, Herz, Weizen, Schauze

tod or tot?

tot + verb: togschlagen, tottreten, totsagen, tot stellen

tot + en: totenstill, totenblass, Totenstille, Totenkopf, Totenbaum, Totenschein

Tod + adjective: todblass, todstill, todfeind, todkrank, todmüde, todschick, todsicher, tödlich


So many spelling rules! I can'T list all of them here, but I came across a nice saying from the school for remembering when to capitalize: mit -ung, -keit, -heit macht sich ein Nomen breit“

TIP 4: to remember commas, color-code Hauptsatz (main clause) and Nebensatz (subordinate clause) in order to see where the commas belong.

TIP 5: Fehlerstrategie (mistake-strategy) - keep track of the kinds of mistakes that occur the most frequently and develop a strategy to avoid them. For example, in my case, I sometimes have a problem making sure the verb is conjugated correctly, esp. if the sentence is particularly long. Strategy: Have I checked all the verbs to see if I've applied the right rule? Here's an example "strategy" that I copied for a student who has trouble with French:


    -Ist es ein Verb auf er?
    -Ist es Grundform oder Vergangenheit? Wenn es Vergangenheit ist, dann ist es é, wenn es Grundform ist, ist es er...
    -Und am Ende einer Prüfung kannst du dich fragen: Habe ich bei allen Verben geschaut, ob ich die Regel richtig angewendet habe?


TIP 6: don't learn the rules all at once, but one or a few at a time. To avoid mistakes, it's important to internalize the grammar/orthography. Tackle one or two grammar/spelling rules at a time and work on them systematically
