Someone just put it succinctly: you can drink booze and make out (dibocxado), dance the night away and
have a late-night discussion of math. Esperanto meetings cater to all of these people, but, more
importantly, to people who would do all of the above, possibly in the same night.
A snapshot of young people's Esperantujo at short past midnight: some people getting drunk, some people
sipping tea in a candle-lit room, some people dancing to techno, some people surrounding a singer-
songwriter accompanying himself on the piano, yet others in a reggae/ska concert, or singing karaoke, some
listening to a lecture on science and Schroedinger's cat, some discussing the ethics of abortion, some
playing Set or Jenga, some getting ready to watch a movie, some sleeping, or sleeping together... and it's
all okay. The groups don't just grudgingly co-exist, they mingle freely (people being part of several groups in
one night, e.g. conversations adjourning to the tea room when people had enough booze, to avoid any
temptation), and I've never yet heard anyone
make a snide comment about another's choice of evening entertainment.
